Restoring the Coral Reefs of the Andaman Sea

By Dr. Anjali Rao, Marine Biologist

A field report from our coral nursery expedition, where aquarium biologists transplanted resilient fragments and documented the early signs of reef recovery.

Our team recently returned from a month-long expedition to the Andaman Islands, where more than 500 coral fragments were prepared for nursery growth. The work was equal parts science, patience, and trust in the quiet resilience of reef ecosystems.

The Andaman Sea remains one of India's great marine biodiversity strongholds, but warming events, sedimentation, and coastal pressure have made reef recovery more fragile than it once was. Our role was to support local restoration teams with aquarium husbandry knowledge and long-term monitoring protocols.

The Restoration Process

The team used micro-fragmentation to prepare small pieces from healthy donor colonies. Each fragment was fixed to a nursery frame at carefully chosen depths, where light, current, and water clarity gave the corals the best chance to stabilize.

Over four weeks, divers logged more than 200 hours underwater. Every frame was mapped, tagged, photographed, and checked for early stress markers before the site was handed back to local partners for follow-up care.

We are not just planting corals; we are creating the conditions for reefs to repair themselves. - Dr. Anjali Rao

What Comes Next

The next phase is monitoring. Growth, bleaching response, algae pressure, and fish recruitment will be compared against nearby control sites so future restoration work can be more targeted and less invasive.

  • Monthly growth photography
  • Temperature and turbidity logging
  • Fish recruitment surveys
  • Shared reporting with local reef partners
